Finding success with social media marketing can take time.

If you're just getting started or you've been at it for awhile with minimal results, I hope today's newsletter serves as a piece of inspiration to keep going.

Back in 2020, I was doing everything I could to get my name out there when I became an advisor—making cold calls, posting on social media, writing blogs, reaching out to reporters, etc.

Doing these tasks daily for months without seeing any form of success can be defeating.

But one day when I was scrolling Twitter, I saw a post from Gary Vaynerchuk's videographer, David Rock, asking his followers to introduce themselves & share what they were working on:

I replied with "i do financial planning for recent grads on a subscription model so it's affordable". Then, someone replied to say they were reaching out via DM:

We chatted for awhile, I answered several questions, and then they introduced me to the creator of a personal finance blog for college students (perfect for my niche at the time):

Once I was connected to the blog person, we scheduled an interview and I shared my story and what I was working on:

Creative business tip: Every time you're featured somewhere, save the webpage as a PDF and keep a folder with all press/media—that way you always have them on hand if links change or pubs go out of business.

I learned this the hard way when I went back to read the article a year or two later and the website was no longer active...

Once the interview was published as an article, they shared it within their newsletter of ~1,000 subscribers.

The story caught someone's attention, they clicked through to my website that was linked in the story, and ended up downloading the free guide I had on the home page.

Once they downloaded the guide, they received an email sequence that introduced myself, who I work with, and why I started my firm with a simple 'ask' to schedule a call.

They scheduled a time, we met for 45 minutes, and they became a client a few days after the call.

At the time, it felt like alchemy.

Now, I understand that it was a lot of luck & mixed with proper marketing.

Go out & increase your surface area of luck.


Long Live Long Form

Last week, we talked about the value of a content library.

I started building my own for self-employed creatives in 2021 and over the summer—while I didn't post any new content—the site averaged 2,000 visitors/month.

And because there are call-to-actions strategically placed throughout the site, I've also been able to pick up ~20 new subscribers/month without promoting the newsletter or free book.
